Bihar’s Farmer-Entrepreneur Shares Her Journey of Self-Reliance and Rural Empowerment on PM Modi’s X Account

On International Women’s Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the achievements of women by handing over his social media accounts to six inspiring women from different fields. This initiative allowed them to share their journeys, challenges, and successes with the nation. In a post on X, PM Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to women’s empowerment and invited participants through the NAMO App.
“The platform is mine, but the stories, struggles, and achievements will be theirs,” he said, emphasizing the importance of recognizing women’s contributions. The selected women came from diverse backgrounds, including sports, rural entrepreneurship, science, and technology.
The six women featured in this initiative were Vaishali Rameshbabu (Chennai), Dr. Anjlee Agarwal (Delhi), Anita Devi (Nalanda, Bihar), Elina Mishra (Bhubaneswar), Ajaita Shah (Rajasthan), and Shilpi Soni (Sagar, Madhya Pradesh). Through this platform, they shared their inspiring stories, encouraging greater recognition and support for women’s achievements.
At Farmland Bazaar, we proudly celebrate women who are making a difference. Today, we bring you the inspiring story of Anita Devia, who took over Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s social media accounts to share her journey of self-reliance and rural empowerment. Through her efforts, she has helped many farmers adopt sustainable and innovative farming methods. Stay with us as we share her journey and the positive impact she has made in the farming community!
Anita Devi, a determined farmer-entrepreneur from Nalanda district, Bihar, has earned the title of the "Mushroom Lady of Bihar" through her hard work and innovation in farming. Coming from a family of farmers, she realized early on that traditional farming had high costs but low profits, making it difficult to improve her family's financial condition. Limited land availability further added to the challenge. Determined to find a more profitable and sustainable alternative, Anita explored mushroom farming, a then-unconventional method in her region.
A Bold Step into Mushroom Farming
Two decades ago, mushroom cultivation was unheard of in Nalanda district. Most farmers grew traditional crops like wheat, paddy, and pulses, which were dependent on weather and soil conditions, offering limited income. Anita, a graduate with a keen interest in agriculture, sought a high-yield, low-investment alternative. She attended seminars and training programs, gaining knowledge about mushroom farming. Inspired and confident, she decided to take the leap and introduced mushroom cultivation in her village.
Her journey officially began after a 10-day training at Govind Ballabh Pant Agricultural University, Uttarakhand, where she also received mushroom seeds. Back in her village, she started small but was determined to expand. She trained local women, empowering them with knowledge about mushroom production and marketing. With the support of her husband, Sanjay Kumar, she connected with online platforms and hotel businesses, increasing demand for their mushrooms.
A Model for Rural Entrepreneurship
Anita Devi's mushroom farming venture now provides seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides to local farmers. She specializes in organic oyster mushrooms, which require no chemical fertilizers, making them more sustainable. Her knowledge of farming techniques, including proper hygiene, air circulation, and quality straw selection, ensures a high-quality yield.
With the government’s recent Makhana Board announcement, Anita is now expanding into makhana (fox nut) production, further diversifying rural entrepreneurship. Her vision is to train more women and increase employment opportunities in agriculture.
Impact and Recognition
Anita’s efforts have transformed hundreds of lives by helping women gain financial independence and confidence. Her Madhopur Farmers Producer Company has engaged 512 farmers, with a goal of reaching 1,500 by next year.
Her dedication has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including:
-
Innovation Farmer Award (2012)
-
Jagjivan Ram Innovative Award (2014)
-
IARI Innovative Farmer Award (2021)
-
Mahila Parivartan Bharat Award (2022) by NITI Aayog
A Message of Empowerment
Reflecting on her journey, Anita shared, "I have faced many struggles, but I always wanted to achieve something on my own. In 2016, I chose self-employment and founded Madhopur Farmers Producer Company Limited." Hailing from Anantpur village in Nalanda, Bihar, she took up mushroom farming after receiving training through the JEEViKA project and National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM). Today, her company supports local farmers by providing seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides, helping many women achieve financial independence.
"The women working with me are not just earning a living but also gaining confidence and self-respect. Economic independence strengthens a woman’s social status, and seeing them become self-reliant is my greatest joy," Anita said. With the recent launch of the Makhana Board, she is now expanding into makhana (fox nut) production, further boosting rural entrepreneurship. Through her story, Anita continues to inspire countless women to take charge of their futures, proving that determination and innovation can create endless possibilities.
Anita was overwhelmed with emotions as she took over the Prime Minister’s social media account. "When I first received the news, I was in disbelief. Me? A simple farmer-entrepreneur from Nalanda, getting an opportunity to share my story on such a grand platform? It felt like a dream," she expressed.
She reflected on her struggles, the initial skepticism she faced, and the long journey toward building a successful farming business. But today, all those hardships seemed worth it. "This is not just my story; it is the story of countless women who refuse to accept limitations. It is for every woman who dares to step beyond boundaries and carve her own destiny," she shared.
The overwhelming response from people across the country filled her with gratitude and motivation. "This platform has given me a voice, and through it, I hope to inspire many more women. If I can do it, so can they. Nothing is impossible when you have determination and belief in yourself," she said.
As she signed off, Anita felt a renewed sense of purpose. "Today, I don’t just feel honored, I feel unstoppable," she concluded, carrying with her the dreams of countless women ready to rise.
PM Modi, in his Women’s Day message, reaffirmed his government’s commitment to empowering women. "We bow to our Nari Shakti on #WomensDay! Our government has always worked towards women’s empowerment, which is reflected in our schemes and programs. Today, as promised, my social media accounts will be taken over by women making a mark in various fields!" he posted on X before handing over his account.
This is not the first time the Prime Minister has taken such an initiative. In 2020, he had similarly handed over his social media accounts to seven women achievers, giving them a global platform to share their inspiring journeys.
Anita Devi’s journey shows the power of hard work, self-reliance, and the difference women can make in rural India. Sharing her story on the Prime Minister’s platform gave hope to many women who dream of becoming independent. Her success proves that with determination and the right support, anything is possible. As more women step forward to create change, stories like Anita’s will continue to inspire and shape a better future for all. Farmland Bazaar is proud to celebrate such women, believing that when women grow, the nation grows too.
