Guinness World Record: Uttar Pradesh Plants Its Way into History

Lucknow, July 14, 2025 — In another record-breaking feat, a total of 37.21 crore saplings were planted across Uttar Pradesh during a 12-hour plantation drive held on July 10, under the theme ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0’. Among the highlights, 2,100 saplings were planted simultaneously at Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU), Lucknow, setting a new Guinness World Record for the highest number of people planting saplings at a single location in one go.

This shattered the previous record set by the Assam government, where 1,229 people planted 1,229 saplings simultaneously on September 17, 2023.

A Mission Rooted in Respect

The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign was launched as a heartfelt initiative to promote environmental sustainability while paying tribute to the selfless love of mothers. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath officially launched the mega plantation campaign, leading by example as he planted saplings in Ayodhya, and later in Azamgarh and Gorakhpur.

This movement became a massive state-wide effort with over 37.21 crore saplings planted in a single day, setting a new benchmark for environmental participation and commitment. The most planted species during the drive were Teak and Sheesham, known for their strength, durability, and ecological value.

The Day Uttar Pradesh Went Green

On July 10, the state came together in an unprecedented show of unity for the planet. At Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) in Lucknow, 2,100 participants planted 2,100 saplings simultaneously under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0’ campaign — setting a new Guinness World Record. The feat was accomplished in collaboration with the Forest Department and BBAU, and marked a proud moment for both the university and the state.

Prominent personalities such as Avnish Awasthi, advisor to the CM, and faculty from 12 schools and universities participated. Students, NCC cadets, NSS volunteers, and Forest Department staff formed the heart of the operation.

Simultaneously, similar plantation drives were held across Lucknow and other key institutions:

• Lucknow University: 300 saplings including mango, lemon, guava, tulsi, aloe vera

• Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU): Several native plant species were planted under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. JP Pandey, who personally planted a sindoor sapling. He emphasized the growing need for environmental awareness amid rising heatwaves.

• Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Language University (KMCLU): The drive was graced by Bakshi Ka Talab MLA Yogesh Shukla, who called tree planting a tribute to mothers and nature. VC Prof. Ajay Taneja highlighted the emotional bond between trees and maternal respect.

• Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi: Officials and staff planted sheesham, jackfruit, mango, guava, and lemon saplings on campus.

• Khun Khun Ji Girls PG College and Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Park also actively participated. At the zoo, Director Aditi Sharma and Deputy Director Utkarsh Shukla led the plantation efforts.

Green Warriors at the Helm

The drive was made inclusive with participation from Deputy CMs Keshav Prasad Maurya and Brijesh Pathak, Governor Anandiben Patel, Assembly Speaker Satish Mahana, Forest Minister Arun Kumar Saxena, and Environment Minister K P Malik — each planting sacred combinations like Triveni and Harishankari in different districts.

Massive Mobilization Across the State

More than 26 government departments, along with Rotary Clubs, FPOs, Mahila & Yuva Mangal Dals, and senior citizens, contributed to the plantation of Teak, Shisham, Moringa, Banyan, Peepal, and other eco-critical species along rivers like Ganga, Yamuna, Gomti, Saryu and highways under the ‘Pavitra Dhara – Vriksha Ropan’ drive.

A Growing Legacy

From highways to schoolyards, the mission continues. July and August will see the planting of Atal One, Ekta One, Oxy One, Shaurya One, and Virasat Vatika gardens across UP.

What makes this green revolution special is not just the numbers — it’s the emotion. Every sapling planted was a gesture of love, respect, and responsibility.
